The Sweetwater Union High School District in Chula Vista, CA, revved up for the 2001-2002 school year over the summer by implementing their Mobile Computer Lab, a van with 40 new iBooks, 10 mini-DV cameras, and 10 digital still cameras.
“Everything is wireless, and we’re even installing a server and a portable generator,” Rusty Meike, technology training manager, told MacCentral.
The lab will serve several schools. Founded in 1920, the district has grown to encompass three junior high schools, seven middle schools, nine senior high schools, one continuation high school, four adult schools, and a Career Awareness/Regional Occupation Program (ROP) Center.
The Sweetwater HSD is the southwestern-most school district in the US, with a student population of about 75,000. Sweetwater district schools serve approximately 33,000 students in grades 7-12 and 34,000 adult learners in the south San Diego county communities of Bonita, Chula Vista, EastLake, Imperial Beach, National City, Otay Mesa, San Ysidro/south San Diego. It’s the largest secondary (grades 7-12) school system in California.
