Normally, USB connectivity is limited to about 17 feet from computer to device, according to peripheral maker
Gefen. The company has introduced the ex-tend-it USB-400, a USB extension system that enables users to attach USB devices to Macs or PCs up to 330 feet away.
The USB 400 itself is comprised of two boxes, a sender and a receiver unit, which are connected via a standard category 5-type networking cable. The receiver unit incorporates four USB ports. The advantage, said the company, is that users can connect USB equipment such as hard drives, keyboards, mice, or other products to a computer from a remote location — potentially isolating systems from noise or permitting products to be kept in secure locations.
Gefen manufactures a wide range of keyboard/video/mouse (KVM) products, extenders and switches. Look for this and other new ex-tend-it products from Gefen at next month’s Audio Engineer Society show in New York City. The event runs from September 21 – 24, 2001.
