You’ll need a USB 2.0 PCI card from a company such as Orange Micro, Adaptec, or Keyspan to use it, but if you have one, you may want to check out Plextor Corp’s new portable PlexWriter 8/8/24U CD-RW drive.
The almost pocketsize PlexWriter 8/8/24U is Mac and PC compatible and features 8X CD-Write, 8X CD-Rewrite, and 24X-max CD-Read. Sporting a silver-and-blue enclosure case, the portable drive measures 5.55 x .87 x 6.73 inches and weighs 1.10 pounds. It’s very first portable drive to come from Plextor, according to Howard Wing, the company’s vice president of sales and marketing. The PlexWriter 8/8/24U is also the first Plextor CD-RW to support the USB 2.0 interface.
The drive features a 2MB buffer and supports a wide variety of writing modes, including Track-at-Once, Disc-at-Once, Session-at-Once, Multi-session, and variable/fixed packet writing. The PlexWriter 8/8/24U drive also features BURN-Proof (buffer underrun-proof) technology, which ensures fault-tolerant CD burning. BURN-Proof prevents errors from occurring when data flow to the drive is interrupted during the recording process due to glitches of one kind or another.
It has a manufacturers suggested retail price of US$289. For more info go to the Plextor Web site.
