Trolltech has announced plans to add Qt/Mac to its Qt Academic Program. As a result, educational institutions will be able to acquire and use Qt for Mac OS X for free. Qt is an object oriented application framework for C++ that enables developers to create GUI applications for Windows, Linux/Unix and embedded Linux applications. Qt/Mac, a Mac OS X-based version, is expected to be released later this year.
Trolltech CEO Haavard Nord said this paves the way for instructors to teach students how to develop a single application that can run on all major desktop platforms using a simple recompile. The company already provides free versions of Qt/Windows, Qt/X11 and Qt/Embedded to registered academic institutions worldwide, including MIT, Stanford University, Beijing University and the University of Tokyo.
Educators interested in enrolling in the Qt Academic Program are encouraged to fill out an enrollment form.
If you’re in the Boston, MA area and you’re interested in attending a technical overview of the Qt/Mac Framework, you can register online as well. It’s happening this Thursday at the Apple Market Center in Boston.
