Alchemy Labs has updated Pony Express, their skinnable e-mail checker for the Mac operating system. The new version, 1.5, adds a separated status display for all accounts and more.
“We think this utility will be useful for many Mac users,” Michael Kornienko of Alchemy Labs told MacCentral. “This clean and lightweight utility will serve as a good companion for an Internet citizen who needs to regularly check mailboxes for new e-mail, but doesn’t want heavyweight e-mail clients to be running in the background all the time — eating memory and CPU time — in order to perform this simple task. What’s more, Pony Express allows messages headers fetching, so users can see the list of e-mail messages, waiting to be downloaded on all accounts, and decide whether to launch an e-mail client to read them.
Version 1.5 also beefs up its support for contextual menus and boasts an improved skin engine that makes it even easier to create more complex skins, Kornienko said. Pony Express supports an unlimited number of POP3 and IMAP4 accounts, including mac.com accounts.
Pony Express is shareware, priced at US$10. It comes in English and French versions and requires Mac OS 8.5 through 9.2.1. It’ll run in the Mac OS X Classic environment, but hasn’t been Carbonized for the new operating system. You can download the latest version (a 464 k file) at the Alchemy Labs download site.
