Sonnet Technologies has announced an improved version of its Crescendo/7200 processor upgrade. The company claims that the new version is now compatible with 168-pin EDO or Fast Page Mode 5 volt DIMMs. While the original Crescendo/7200 had always included its own onboard RAM expansion, it had not worked with some varieties of DIMMs.
Sonnet is also shipping updated Crescendo/7200 software that removes a previously imposed limitation of 256MB of virtual memory — upping the limit to the full 1GB supported by Mac OS natively. Sonnet says the new software also enables users to support a broader number of third-party PCI-based expansion cards. Visit Sonnet’s Crescendo/7200 compatibility matrix for more details. Existing users of the Crescendo/7200 can download the software update from Sonnet’s Web site.
The Power Mac 7200 system incorporates a CPU soldered to the motherboard, but the Crescendo/7200 enables users to install a G3 or G4-powered CPU upgrade regardless. It works on 7200, 7215, 8200 and Workgroup Server 7250 models.
The Crescendo/7200 is compatible with System 7.5.3 – Mac OS 9.0.4. Sonnet plans to release a Mac OS 9.1 support upgrade this fall.
