Apple’s Hot News page features a new story about Andy Harris and his Red Roaster Internet Café, a San Francisco establishment that combines art and digital technology together in a way that Mac users might find particularly appealing. The article, penned by Sam McMillan, is entitled Neighborhood Nerve Center.
Harris offers users very modestly priced flat-rate access to one of a dozen iMac DVs connected to the Internet using AirPort wireless networking technology. USB and FireWire connections abound for connections to CD burners, scanners, digital cameras, a color printer and other nifty gadgets. These systems aren’t used just for Web surfing, reports McMillan — Harris encourages his customers to use software like Adobe Photoshop and Apple’s Final Cut Pro, as well.
As a result, folks who drop by Harris’ establishment don’t just check e-mail or visit Web sites — often they’re editing digital video and burning it to CD-R, mixing music or developing Web sites, said McMillan. Harris calls his establishment a “creative technology hangout.”
