Novell, Inc. noted the release of the Novell Native File Access Pack, which enables users of NetWare servers to mount the volumes on their desktop without installing any Novell software. The pack works with Windows, Mac, UNIX and Linux operating systems.
The software manages such connections through Novell eDirectory, and communicates with Macs specifically by supporting Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) over TCP/IP. Previous access solutions have required Novell client software on the computers, according to the company.
Novell Native File Access Pack also provides support for the native authentication features of each operating system, as well — in this way, user passwords can be transmitted securely to the NetWare server and verified against the user’s password in eDirectory.
Novell VP Jeff Hawkins said that his company’s users need cost-effective ways to connect to disparate hardware and software systems. “With the Novell Native File Access Pack, we are providing legions of computer users who don’t use Windows PCs access to the most reliable and secure networking and storage platform on the market in NetWare,” said Hawkins.
The Novell Native File Access Pack for NetWare 5.1 is now available through authorized resellers and solution providers for US$299. Users with maintenance or upgrade protection agreements will receive the pack as a free download, and it will be bundled with NetWare 6 when it ships in October.
