If you’re looking for some serious enterprise-level backup muscle, you might be interested in a new offering from Ecrix Corp., the VXA AutoRak. The system is the first of its kind, according to Ecrix — it offers up to 660GB of compressed data storage through a rack-mountable tape storage autoloader.
The VXA AutoRak transfers data at up to 21.6GB/hour and will cost less than US$3,500, according to Ecrix. It’s available in a 2U size that fits into a standard 19-inch server rack. The autoloader sports a control panel that enables users to configure and monitor data backup and restore operations. The device also features an entry/exit port that can be locked, and an optional intelligent bar-code reader. The system comes with a three-year warranty and 24-hour advanced replacement service. Expect to see it by the end of the year.
VXA tape products feature a read/write architecture that Ecrix likens to Internet communication — data is stored in packets rather than large blocks. This process is designed for 100 percent data restore, according to Ecrix. The tapes themselves are comprised of an advanced metal evaporated medium called VXAtape. VXA tape drives are compatible with all major operating systems and backup software, including Mac OS.
