4D InstallMaker 1.0, a visual development environment for building cross-platform installers, is now available from 4D Inc., publishers of the 4th Dimension RAD/RDBMS Environment and WebSTAR Server Suite.
4D InstallMaker runs on the traditional Mac operating system, though a Mac OS X version is under development. Version 1.0 is now available at introductory pricing of US$349 per year (it’s regularly $399 a year). However, it can be run in demo mode indefinitely for free with 4D-sponsorship banners and limited customization features, according to Brendan Coveney, president and CEO of 4D.
4D InstallMaker was created using 4D itself. You can use it with no programming required, Coveney said. Each installation project can be simulated in a “test” mode, without quitting the application. Up to 12 languages per project are allowed. Installer messages can be customized individually for each language. For security, 4D InstallMaker handles module serialization, which means that developers have guaranteed protection of application parts, or the application as a whole, Coveney said.
