SmartDisk Corp. has announced new versions of its VST FireWire Desktop Drives with larger capacities and lower prices. They’ve introduced 80GB and 100GB systems to replace the 75GB drive that was previously the largest.
VST FireWire Desktop Drives ship with VST Format 2.3.1 with Hot Plug Events for Macs — it’s software that enables users to partition and format their drives, install password protection, write protection, partition encryption and more. Hot Plug Events let users assign specific automatic tasks to the drive when it’s first plugged into the FireWire interface, such as performing a backup or launching an MP3 play list or automatically downloading e-mail.
The VST FireWire Desktop Drive line now consists of 40, 60, 80 and 100GB models that carries suggested retail prices of US$299.95, $349.95, $449.95, and $499.95 respectively. The 40GB and 100GB units are expected to be available in October; the 60GB and 80GB units are available now.
In addition to serving as desktop music archives, digital image warehouses and video libraries, the SmartDisk VST FireWire Desktop Drives can be used as boot devices, for simple, easy-to-use and economical backup and for general purpose hard disk expansion.
