McAfee Software has released a native Mac OS X version of Virex, its anti-virus software.
Virex X 7.0 includes a native Mac OS X application and a command-line scanner. Though the name indicates a completed product and it’s described as an update, part of the online notes also call it a “beta,” saying, “this beta has been designed to run only on the released version of OS X or later. We do not recommend running this product on previous releases of OS X, including the Public Beta of OS X, as this product uses new functionality which was not available in earlier versions.”
Whatever it is, Virex X 7.0 is designed to detect and clean Mac and Windows viruses and trojans. In addition to native Mac OS X support, it offers online HTML help, access to McAfee’s online Virus Information Library, and report generation. It also supports drag and drop scanning and cleaning.
A Command-line scanner is also included. It can be used through the Terminal application. Scan operations can be scheduled via cron using the command-line scanner.
Virex X 7.0 requires Mac OS X 10.0.3 or higher. To get a copy, you’ll need to fill out an online form.
