Snap Appliances today announced that it’s shipping the Snap Server 12000, a terabyte-class network attached storage system with support for multiple client operating systems including Mac OS. It’s the highest-capacity Snap Server yet released.
The Snap Server 12000 sports 960GB of storage capacity in a 3U tall rack-mountable device. The company said the new system is designed to offer businesses an alternative to Windows NT-based servers or SCSI-attached RAID systems. The Snap Server utilizes Snap OS, a version of UNIX that has been optimized for security, stability and reliability, according to the company — it occupies a footprint of less than 10MB.
Network Attached Server (NAS) systems like the Snap Server 12000 are designed to provide networks with file storage capacity without the need for a separate dedicated computer to act as a server — everything is built right into the Snap Server itself. The system is typically accessible to end users within minutes of installation, and requires no network downtime in order to install.
The Snap Server 12000 features twelve hot-swappable hard drives, as well redundant and hot-swappable fans and power supplies. The system also features an auto-sensing 10/100/1000 Copper Gigabit ethernet interface, and supports RAID levels 0, 1, and 5 (in RAID 5 configuration, the device’s total storage capacity drops from 960 to 750GB).
Like other Snap Servers, the 12000 model features cross-platform support for Windows, Novell, UNIX and Linux, and Mac OS. System managers can set user and file-level security, and monitor and manage through SNMP as well as via a Web-based interface.
The Snap Server 12000 carries a suggested retail price of US$14,999.
