Handmark today announced an update to its popular MobileDB database application, designed for Palm OS-based PDAs — MobileDB3. As part of the update, the company is introducing a new plug-in technology that facilitates connections between MobileDB3 and Mac-hosted FileMaker Pro databases.
The new MobileDB3 application now supports new data types, can export any record from a database to the built-in Date Book application, and can categorize an unlimited number of databases. New data types include numbers, sequence, text, lists, date, time and checkboxes. Handmark also noted that MobileDB3’s date and time fields incorporate the standard Palm OS pop-up dialog boxes.
According to Handmark, MobileDB’s biggest enhancement for the new version is the pending availability of “plug-ins” developed to work with popular PC and Mac database software — including FileMaker Pro for the Mac. The new plug-in automatically creates a MobileDB3 data file from FileMaker on the Mac, making it possible for MobileDB users to easily convert existing data to something they can access and use on the Palm OS-based PDA.
Handmark marketing VP Douglas Edwards noted that the FileMaker plug-in will be available later this fall.
MobileDB3 with the FileMaker plug-in costs US$29.99; upgrading from previous versions costs $19.99. More details are available from Handmark’s Web site.
