Huge Systems, a new manufacturer of RAID 3 storage solutions, has rolled out its HugeMediaVault family of desktop storage systems, which are Mac compatible, company spokesperson Sheldon Liebman told MacCentral.
HugeMediaVault includes the industry’s first “Terabyte on a Desktop” system, he said. The high-end HugeMediaVault-DualMax offers up to a full terabyte of storage in a 10.25 by 7.5 by 14.75-inch system. HugeMediaVault is also the first shipping RAID 0/3 product that utilizes a single chip RAID 3 controller combined with an onboard processor and dedicated cache memory, Liebmand said. This new controller technology reduces manufacturing costs, increases system performance and provides RAID 3 reliability for the entire HugeMediaVault family of products, he added.
“The HugeMediaVault is a true plug and play RAID 3 disk array for Mac, Windows and SGI computers,” Mike Anderson, chief designer of the HugeMediaVault product line, said.
In another first, HugeMediaVault-DualMax features a dual channel U160 SCSI 3 controller that supports uncompressed HDTV recording and playback at resolutions up to and including 1080i at 10 bits. The system provides a data transfer rate of 320 MB/second burst and a sustained transfer rate of at least 200 MB/second.
Finally, HugeMediaVault is the first product to combine high capacity storage, high speed data transfer rates and RAID 3 data protection in a package that costs less than US$10 per gigabyte, Leibman said. The product is available in configurations ranging from 200 gigabyte for $2,795 up to 1 terabyte for $9,529.
