Macrovision, a company that specializes in copy protection and digital rights management (DRM) technologies, is releasing SafeDisc LT for Mac OS X and Mac OS 9.
Plus, the company is porting all members of its SafeDisc and SafeCast DRM product families to Mac OS X. SafeDisc is copy protection software. SafeCast is a digital rights management product.
SafeDisc LT for the Mac authenticates original media and prevents unauthorized copying of original media. Brian McPhail, vice president of Macrovision’s Consumer Software Division, said that more than 100 million software CDs have been manufactured using SafeDisc.
He added that future releases of the SafeDisc family for Mac OS X and Mac OS 9 will include API Support, which allows for encryption of discrete software functions; installer protection, which assures installation from valid media; an anti-hacking architecture that disables hacking tools and prevents tampering; and fail-safe manufacturing that manages mastering of media on certified production lines.
McPhail said that future releases of SafeCast for Mac OS X will include such features as Try & Die (controlled trial usage with automated disablement), Try & Buy (controlled trial usage with automated or attended purchase), Try & Subscribe (controlled trial usage with subscription activation), Purchase Only, Subscription Only, Registration (enforced or deferred) and Binding (which binds license rights to a particular desktop system or hard drive).
