Apple’s Developer Kitchens bring Mac OS developers onto the Apple campus for intensive sessions on various technical topics. Recently the company decided to add three new kitchens dedicated specifically for icon design. They’re targeted at visual designers looking to maximize their ability to design Mac OS X icons and graphics.
The Icon Design kitchens are one-day events that will bring together attendees with members of Apple’s Human Interface Design team. The team will cover the gamut from conceptualization to realization to production. Folks who come to the kitchen will learn tips and tricks in Photoshop, how to model real world materials and how to create shadows.
The Icon Design kitchens are scheduled from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on Tuesday, November 13; Tuesday, November 27; and Tuesday, December 11. The events happen on the Apple campus in Cupertino, in Building 1 at 1 Infinite Loop.
Apple provides lunch, snacks, computers and the latest system software — it’s your job to get there and pay for your own lodging if necessary. You’ll also need to bring your own design work and design tools (including the software). You should also bring your own storage device (a FireWire-equipped drive is suggested).
Registration is limited and required — if you plan on attending, you must fill out the RSVP form and you must receive a confirmation e-mail before a space will be reserved for you.
To attend these sessions, you must have a membership in the Apple Developer Connection (a free Online membership is acceptable, if you haven’t already enrolled). You should also be familiar with the chapter on Icon Design in the latest Mac OS X Human Interface Guidelines. You should also have a design background and be fluent with the tools of the trade — Photoshop, Illustrator, Freehand, and 3D modeling applications.
