Yesterday we brought you news about Belkin’s new line of USB media reader/writers. The new line of devices enable USB-equipped Macs to read from and write to various digital media including CompactFlash Type I and II cards, SmartMedia and MultiMedia/Secure Digital Cards. Since then, we’ve received additional information from the company about the Mac OS X compatibility status of the products.
Two of the new media reader/writers are plug and play. Both the USB Media Reader/Writer for CompactFlash and the USB Media Reader/Writer for MultiMedia Cards/Secure Digital Cards are recognized as Mass Storage devices and will work as plug and play devices under Mac OS X, according to a Belkin spokesperson that spoke with MacCentral.
The USB Media Reader/Writer for SmartMedia does not, however. Currently Belkin is tooling drivers to help support the device under Mac OS X and plans to release them in due course. The USB Dual Media Reader/Writer for CompactFlash and SmartMedia also requires drivers, because of its support for SmartMedia, Belkin told MacCentral. The drivers for these devices will be available for download from Belkin’s Web site.
The new line of USB media reader/writers are expected to be released next week, just in time for the COMDEX trade show.
