Eridanus has released Baker 1.0.1 for Mac OS X. It’s a US$35 utility to simplify the task of downloading files from Usenet newsgroups. Baker eliminates the hassle by automating much of the process, Mike Trivisonno of Eridanus said.
“Basically, all I do is enter my news server info, add the newsgroups I regularly monitor, and click the Start button,” he said in describing how easy it is to configure a new Baker document.
“Of course, Baker’s support for multiple news servers, multiple simultaneous connections, newsgroup cycling and news server cycling is nice to have when basic downloading options aren’t up to the task,” Trivisonno said.
Baker also sports features such as automatic assembly and decoding of multipart files, even if the parts arrive out of order, days apart or on different servers, Trivisonno said. You can download a demo at the product Web site. Unregistered versions are fully functional but will occasionally display reminders to register.
