dvGarage’s 3D Toolkit has won the Best Buy award from Digit Magazine. dvGarage is a QuickTime-only site dedicated to “building the next generation of visual media artists. 3D Toolkit is a Mac only application that the Garage’s Alex Lindsay told MacCentral will give Mac users “unparalleled access” to learning 3D.
The 3D Toolkit is designed as a visual training system that ships with a full version of the Electric Image 2.9 software. Its goal: to teach 3D principles and techniques to visual artists in all industries.
Digit magazine offers this praise: “The 3D Toolkit is an excellent solution for any creative person from a graphic arts, Web design or video editing background who wants to get into 3D. And for anyone who wants get their hands on movie-level special effects software for a ludicrously affordable price. It is worth it for the full version of Electric Image 2.9 alone. It’s also the best way to make your way into professional 3D.”
The 3D Toolkit, which costs US$199, is made up of five parts: the tools, an overview, basic tutorials, advanced tutorial and bonus materials. The tools include an animation system (essentially Electric Image 2.9.2) and a modeler — each application will also have a 20-minute overview. Electric Image was chosen because it’s relatively straightforward to learn and has a lot of power under the hood, Lindsay said.
In the full version, customers will receive the Electric Image Animation System and Modeler software, along with overview movies and 21 in-depth tutorials with project files, all designed to give you two years of 3D knowledge in two weeks, according to Morgan McDermott, one of the lead artists of the 3D Toolkit. The basic tutorials include movies that provide step-by-step guides to each technique. The training system is structured to get customers grounded quickly in the basics, so they can more easily progress on to the intermediate and then advanced tutorials, McDermott said.
“The tutorials in the 3D Toolkit are some of the most comprehensive 3D tutorials ever made,” he added. “They are clear and provide key insights into the world of 3D that took me years to acquire.”
The 3D Toolkit is the first in a series of visual training products dvGarage will develop with the goal of fostering a global community of visual media developers where no one is left out.
