Too much storage capability is never enough, and following the debut this past year of their terabyte equipped Epic-DS FireWire-based RAID system,
has now gone a step further. The company has announced the Epic-DS Rackmount RAID for folks who need gobs of FireWire storage that they don’t want to leave in plain view on a desk. The new system enables users to hold up to a hair’s breadth more than a full terabyte — 1,080GB in total — of FireWire-based data storage in a chassis designed to occupy space in a standard 19-inch equipment rack. The rackmount configuration stands 4U tall.
The Epic-DS FireWire RAID utilizes Oxford Semiconductor’s popular Oxford 911 ATA-100 FireWire bridge. The RAID system utilizes redundant power supplies to keep operating even in the event of a partial equipment failure, as well as multiple cooling fans. It can be configured as a single or dual-channel device and offers performance up to 47MB/sec reads and 38MB/sec writes.
Two separate rackmount configurations are currently being offered on FirewireDirect’s Web site: a 900GB model that costs US$4,575 and a 1,080GB model that carries a $5,995 price tag. Both systems are compatible with Mac OS and Windows 2000.
