illumineX today announced the release of RoX, a new arcade game designed exclusively for Mac OS X.
The game is clearly inspired by the coin-op arcade game classic Asteroids. In RoX, you must destroy space rocks hurled by alien invaders at the Earth. Your fleet is all that stands between the planet and destruction. The game has a simple enough premise — shoot at anything that moves, and dodge what you can’t hit.
RoX features support for both Windowed and Full Screen display modes. It supports Mac OS X’s Aqua interface and even employs illumineX’s “Chrome” theme, which it has used on previously released Mac OS X game titles. Full help is also part of the game (including strategy tips and a description of the game’s physics). It even sports an animated Dock icon.
RoX incorporates illumineX’s new software updater technology, which will automatically download and install new components of the application as they are updated. illumineX bills the updater as “robust and user friendly” thanks to Mac OS X’s Cocoa and Aqua technologies.
RoX can be downloaded from illumineX’s Web site now. You can play the game in a free-trial mode, although it must be registered if you plan to continue using it and want to play beyond the free levels. Registration costs US$19.95.
