Aspyr Media’s anxiously anticipated multiplayer gaming patch to Deus Ex is now available for download. In an interesting change of pace, the distribution of the patch is being coordinated exclusively by Apple — users can visit Apple’s Mac Games Web page for more details.
The new 35MB patch grafts multiplayer capabilities onto Deus Ex’s framework — when the game was first released last summer, Deus Ex supported single player gaming only.
Aspyr production manager Amy Torres had some straightforward advice for Deus Ex fans when MacCentral talked with her earlier today.
“Get the patch, get online, get busy,” said Torres.
The patch enables Mac users to go head to head with each other in a variety of different deathmatch contests with other online players. Using the new patch, you can take on both Mac and PC Deus Ex users, as well. The patch also supports GameRanger, the popular, free Mac-only online gaming service.
Developed originally by Ion Storm, the Macintosh version of Deus Ex (and the new multiplayer patch) was converted by Westlake Interactive. Aspyr Media publishes the game for the Mac. In order to use the patch, you’ll need the full retail version of Deus Ex.
The distribution of Deus Ex Multiplayer Patch is being handled by Apple and its content distribution partner, Akamai. The Web page where the Deus Ex Multiplayer Patch is located also enables users to buy the game directly from the Apple Store.
The release of the Deus Ex multiplayer patch coincides with some other changes to Apple’s Games Web site — the site now features links to demo downloads, information on OS X and gaming, links to online gaming resources and more.
