Ever wanted a tool that would allow you to get text into or out of a QuarkXPress or QuarkXPress Passport document? How about a tool that gives you professional control over your textual elements without the overhead of the full suite of design and production tools?
says you’ll like the just announced QuarkCopyDesk Special Edition, a stand-alone text processing and editing application designed to meet the needs of copy editors, copywriters, reporters, and researchers. You can purportedly use it to create any kind of text, from informal newsletters to books.
With all the text-processing features of QuarkXPress, QuarkCopyDesk SE provides users with exact copy fitting information and typographic control, but without the overhead of graphic features, according to Glen Turpin of Quark. He added that the new app “integrates seamlessly” with QuarkXPress. Articles created in QuarkCopyDesk SE can be imported into QuarkXPress layouts, with exact hyphenation, justification, and line endings.
In addition to standard word-processing features that allow users to create and edit text, QuarkCopyDesk SE includes features intended specifically for writers and editors. Text can be viewed in WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get), full screen, or galley view, and multiple article components can be managed in a single document.
You can specify screen fonts for optimum readability and fast screen redraw in Galley and Full Screen views. Line counts and actual line breaks can be viewed in Galley view. You can add and edit “sticky” notes and enclose them within an article or copy and paste text between notes and article text. You can also print notes with article text. With QuarkCopyDesk SE, users can monitor story length according to words, lines, or column depth; display underset/overset amounts by words, lines, or column depth; and import and export text in Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, and XPress Tags formats.
“With the release of QuarkCopyDesk SE, we provide a complete set of tools for publishers, and a technology platform for developers to create best-of-breed publishing solutions,” said Brett Mueller, product manager, in a statement. “We have exciting OEM relationships in the pipeline, and plan to work closely with developers who share our commitment to bring standards-based, media independent publishing solutions to the industry.”
QuarkCopyDesk SE can be tailored to meet the specific needs of any workflow with XTensions technology, he added. (XTensions modules are add-on software that enhance Quark products and deliver vital niche solutions to Quark customers. An XTensions Developer Kit (XDK) allows developers to create XTensions software or OEM solutions for QuarkCopyDesk SE.)
Quark plans to add support for XML to subsequent releases of QuarkCopyDesk SE. This will allow writers to focus on content without worrying about its delivery and give publishers the freedom to deliver content in print, on the Web, in eBooks, or to a variety of other media with fewer restraints while keeping costs down, the company said.
QuarkCopyDesk SE is available for both Mac OS and Windows and can be purchased by calling Quark customer service at 1-800-676-4575. The list price is US$299.
