Sandisk Corp. used its presence at this week’s CeBIT trade show to introduce a new USB-based card reader designed to support Secure Digital (SD) cards and MultiMediaCards (MMCs). The SanDisk SecureMate card reader works with both Macs and Windows-based PCS.
MMCs and SD cards are gaining popularity as removable and transportable storage media for handheld computers, digital video cameras, MP3 players, cell phones and other consumer devices. This new peripheral enables Mac users to transfer data from their MMC or SD card directly to the Mac’s hard drive.
System requirements call for a USB-equipped Mac with G3 processor or higher; and Mac OS 8.6 or 9. SanDisk has not offered a roadmap for OS X compatibility with this product.
The SanDisk SecureMate reader will be available this July at retail outlets throughout North America, Europe, Canada, South America, Japan and Asia. The suggested retail price is US$29.95.
The CeBIT Trade Show and Exhibition takes place now through March 28th in Hannover, Germany.
