The folks at SuSE Linux, a solutions provider in open source operating system software, say that SuSE Linux 7.1 PowerPC Edition will be available in early April. They’ll be supplying the latest Linux operating system and more than 1,000 assorted applications for Mac users on six CDs.
With SuSE’s optimized Kernel 2.4.2, SuSE Linux 7.1 PowerPC Edition boasts enhanced USB support. It also features support for the sound system ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) for Power Macs.
SuSE’s integrated installation tool, YaST2, automatically recognizes and configures the hardware during the installation process. SuSE Linux 7.x PowerPC Edition is the first Linux distribution worldwide that supports IBM’s pSeries with POWER3 processors. The new XFree86 4.01 is now able to identify common graphics subsystems like the Rage 128 graphics card from ATI.
SuSE Linux 7.1 PowerPC Edition — which will sport six CDs, 500-page manual, and 60 days of installation support — will be available directly from the manufacturer as well as from bookstores and software retailers. The recommended retail price is US$49.95. For more info go to the SuSE Web site.
