Roxio’s CD mastering and duplication software,
Toast 5 Titanium, is now available, according to information posted to the company’s Web site. Product manager Victor Nemechek confirmed to MacCentral that the software is starting to show up in stores nationwide. “Toast 5 should be widely available in stores on Monday, April 2nd,” said Nemechek.
Toast 5 Titanium is the latest iteration of Roxio’s popular Toast product. And Roxio, in case you don’t know, is the software publishing subsidiary of Adaptec. The software lets Macs equipped with recordable CD and DVD drives to burn discs. Toast’s previous incarnations have long been a mainstay of the Mac market, both as an independent commercially-available title and as an OEM product bundled with various third-party CD-RWs. Nemechek provided MacCentral with
about Toast 5 Titanium earlier this month.
The new version of Toast incorporates a brand new graphical user interface, and also sports the ability to do background printing, regardless of whether or not your drive has buffer underrun (or “burnproof”) protection. Other new features include preparation of digital video files for the Video CD format; DVD mastering on DVD-R, DVD-RW, and DVD-RAM drives; support for the MP3 CD-ROM format; improved data and audio CD format support; more broad support for CD copying; and an online help system.
Toast 5 Titanium’s system requirements call for a PowerPC-based Mac running Mac OS 8.6 or later; 12MB of RAM; 100MB free hard disk space; QuickTime 4.0 or later; and a recordable CD or DVD drive. Mac OS X support has been promised, as well — Roxio plans to deliver an OS X update for Toast once Apple makes available the appropriate development materials needed to incorporate device support via Mac OS X.
Nemechek also advised to keep an eye out for
a forthcoming update
to Toast 5 Titanium, version 5.0.1, which will work with Apple’s Disc Burner and iTunes software. That update is expected to be released in April.
