A new version of the popular chat software AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) has been released. The new version, 4.5.78, is ready for download now.
AIM enables you to send messages — in real time — with other AIM users over the Internet. Although it’s the work of popular online service America Online (AOL), you don’t need to have an AOL account to get AIM to work, and it costs nothing to use.
AIM provides support for multiuser chats or one-on-one instant messaging. You can maintain a “buddy list” and publish information about yourself to make it easier for friends or folks with common interests to find you. AIM also features hooks into AOL, so you can check your mail, search the Web and get updated stock information.
The new version of AIM has now been optimized for Mac OS X. It sports a new “Aqua” style interface, as well.
Although AIM is OS X compatible, it’ll still work on systems with older software installed. Minimum system requirements call for a PowerPC-based Mac; Mac OS 8.5 or higher; 5MB available HD space; 28.8 dial-up or better Internet connection; 800×600 resolution with 256 color support or better.
AOL is distributing this software a beta version; please keep your expectations in order accordingly.
