Opera Software has released Opera for Mac 5.0 Tech Preview 2, an early development version of their Web browser alternative. The new version can be downloaded from the company’s Web site.
Opera’s primary claim to fame is its small footprint (it’s a 2.2MB download) and its high speed. Although this technology preview of Opera isn’t feature complete — it’s missing Java support, lacks AppleScript functionality, and sports limited functions in other areas — the previous tech preview has already received high marks for fast page rendering and other features.
The new technology preview, released today, contains fixes to bugs noted by users of Opera for Mac 5.0tp1. The new version has also been released because the old version has expired.
Opera for Mac 5.0tp2 is free to download and use. Please bear in mind that this is an early development version, and judge its usability and stability accordingly.
Opera Software notes that this version is for Power PC-based Macs running System 7.5.3 through Mac OS 9.1. The company also plans to release a carbonized version, and will make a 68K version for older Mac systems, as well.
