Extensis has discontinued PhotoGraphics, its Photoshop plug-in that put illustration tools directly inside the Adobe graphics application by providing a set of drawing and advanced text capabilities.
The product was canned because of the enhanced functionality of Photoshop 6 and incompatibilities between PhotoGraphics and the new Mac OS 9.1, according to Patrick Kimball, Extensis’ public relations director. In addition to that, user interest for the product was declining.
“The situation you run into with plug-ins is that, in some ways, you’re always racing against the parent application,” Kimball told MacCentral. “A lot of the features of PhotoGraphics are now part of Photoshop 6. And there are some major breakages with the product and Mac OS 9.1. When we accessed what was involved in making it compatible with 9.1, and considered the features of Photoshop 6, we decided not to continue updating PhotoGraphics.”
Extensis will stop selling this product. However, technical support will still be available though Sept. 1.
