This is the third public preview release since QuickTime 5 debuted; the current release version is 4.1.2, but Apple has encouraged interested users to download the preview version to test new features and technology. The software was first unveiled at QuickTime Live! Conference held in Beverly Hills, Calif. last October. QuickTime 5 Preview 2 debuted in early December of 2000.
QuickTime 5 sports a new interface; “skip” protection for streaming QuickTime media; embedded support for Macromedia Flash 4; Cubic VR (or 360 degree QuickTime VR files); a new music synthesizer; and many other improvements.
System requirements for QuickTime 5 Preview 3 includes a PowerPC-based Mac; 32MB RAM; and Mac OS 7.5.5 or later. The file consists of a 9.3MB download. As of press time, the software had been released for English US versions of Mac OS specifically.
Apple notes that QuickTime 5 Public Preview will replace any older versions of QuickTime installed on the target Macintosh. Users are encouraged to write down their current QuickTime Pro registration key before installing.
