As we mentioned in our Feb. 10 article, PowerBooks are popular among adventurers and explorers. And this is true of Ann Bancroft and Live Arnesen who are using the Apple portable during an Antarctic adventure.
According to an Apple Hot News story, the two explorers have just reached the “psychological halfway point” in their attempt to become the first team of women to ski across Antarctica.
The two women are crossing Antarctica alone, if you don’t count their Sony digital video camera and PowerBook as companions. Still, thousands of students and armchair explorers are following their journey online, where daily news, video updates from the ice, and background information appear daily.
“We’ve got a PowerBook with us,” Bancroft is quoted as saying in the Hot News story. “It’s hooked up to the solar panel right now and it’s actually charging in this flat, dull light.”
The PowerBook rides atop the women’s sled, wrapped in a sleeping bag. At expedition headquarters in Minneapolis, raw video and audio content is edited using Final Cut Pro and posted on the Web as QuickTime video and audio clips.
