Apple has released a new version of the CarbonLib system library. The new version, 1.2.5, is available to Mac OS 9 users through the Software Update control panel. As MacCentral went to press with this article, a separate download for version 1.2.5 had not been made available from Apple’s Web site.
CarbonLib is a system software library used by software based on Carbon. Carbon is Apple’s system technology designed to provide application compatibility between Mac OS X and previous versions of Mac OS. Software that has been made compatible with Carbon requires the CarbonLib library to work on pre-Mac OS X systems.
According to Apple, CarbonLib 1.2.5 “delivers new functionality and features for Carbon-based applications on Mac OS 8.6, all Mac OS 9 releases, and Mac OS X.”
To find out if your Mac can be upgraded to CarbonLib 1.2.5, select the Software Update control panel and click the Update Now button. The new library is approximately 1.6MB in size.
