Mac acceleration product maker PowerLogix has announced the iForce G4. The upgrade is designed to replace the factory G3 processor card in iMacs with a G4 processor running at speeds up to 500MHz. The upgrade is expected to begin shipping the second quarter of the year.
The iForce G4 is designed to work with iMac Rev A through Rev D models — the Rev A and B units were the original “Bondi Blue” iMacs, and Rev Cs and Ds were “fruit colored” systems operating at either 266 or 333MHz. The iForce upgrades feature backside cache memory sizes of either 512K or 1MB depending on the specific model.
PowerLogix claims that upgraded iMacs will not only feature enhanced processor performance, but will also be able to take advantage of software optimized with AltiVec code, such as Adobe Photoshop and Premiere, and Casady & Greene’s SoundJam.
The iForce G4 is available in four separate configurations:
PowerLogix says that the iForce G4 is very similar to the stock processor card, except for the faster processor and cache memory components. The factory-installed processor card on these iMac models is socketed and can be removed and replaced with the iForce, according to PowerLogix.
