Gathering of Developers has inadvertently tipped its hand about the newest game to carry the legendary name of Myth — the series started by Bungie Software. Specific details about the game’s development status are still non-existent, but Gathering did give fans a peek at the new game’s storyline.
According to the Gathering of Goodness calendar — an item that GoD is sending to members of its fan club — the game will be a prequel called Myth III: The Wolf Age, and features a storyline that takes place before the events unveiled in Myth: The Fallen Lords and Myth II: Soulblighter.
Bungie’s acquisition last year by Microsoft put the future of the Myth series into the hands of Take Two Interactive Software, parent company of Gathering of Developers. For selling their 19.9 percent stake in Bungie to Microsoft, Take Two received Bungie’s 3D fighting game Oni, rights to publish two games based on Bungie’s still-unreleased Halo engine, and the Myth series. Since then Take Two and Gathering have kept mum about their plans for the series — this is the first info to leak from the companies since the events of last year.
Myth III: The Wolf Age will apparently follow the life of Connacht, a legendary hero who saved humanity from Myrkridia and the Trow — the man who would one day become the emperor of all humanity. The game’s timeline places it a millennium before the events revealed in the original Myth game and its popular sequel.
Game news sites Blue’s News and Stomped both carried reports about Myth III. Stomped also spoke with Gathering CEO Mike Wilson, who would not comment on the news directly but intimated that his company plans to make a formal announcement at next week’s Macworld Expo in San Francisco.
