Metrowerks announced that two new CodeWarrior products, CodeWarrior Learning Edition 2.0 and CodeWarrior for Palm OS 7.0, will ship later this year. CodeWarrior Learning Edition 2.0 will ship on February 1, and will retail for $49. Code Warrior for Palm OS 7.0 is available now and retails for $369.
Jeff Tiezen, public relations manager at Metrowerks, said that the new version of CodeWarrior for Palm OS will feature a new, easier to use Integrated Development Environment (IDE). In addition to this, the new version will also add an improved linker that ensures that code blocks which are too large for Palm system are not used, an improved debugger that also features error correction and USB debugging support for the HandSpring Visor and an improved compiler that is up to date with the latest ANSI/ISO C/C++ standard.
In addition to updating CodeWarrior for Palm OS, Metroworks also announced that it intends to develop enterprise level development tools for the Palm OS. This larger product, expected to ship this fall, will have the full CodeWarrior for Palm OS IDE plus Java tools, a Conduit Development Kit (CDK), and support for X86 and 68K CPUs–as well as other useful third party applications, examples and tools.
CodeWarrior Learning Edition 2.0 works on both PCs and Macs, and also supports C, C++ and Java. It is intended to be a self or group aid to help novice, beginning and intermediate coders learn programming, the CodeWarrior IDE or a new programming language.
The original CodeWarrior Leraning Edition, though very useful as an instruction aid, was not as streamlined a learning tool as it could be. Version 2.0 adds more study materials, uses a new installer to streamline the complex process of installing an IDE and uses a multimedia tutorial to help get novice users up to speed with CodeWarrior.
Metrowerks also announced that a new virtual semester was beginning at CodeWarriorU, Metrowerks virtual university to teach all things code and Metrowerks IDE related. Courses this month include the first part of the advanced placement in computer science series, a course intended to help students get college credit by passing the AP exam in computer science, a basic introduction to C, and other courses important to coding in general and coding on the Mac. Mertrowerks intends to have a Palm OS programming course within the first quarter of this year.
