The Mireth Technology Corporation
has released version 4.8 of its Mac eDocument shredder, ShredIt, which provides a way to destroy personal and confidential information.
It can be used to shred a file, a folder, or even the free space on a disk. ShredIt overwrites the file contents, file name, creator and type. The changes are permanent so use it with caution.
Prior to version 4.8 file contents would be overwritten multiple times (as configured by the user) but the file name was only overwritten one time. This update adds support for multiple overwrites of file names so the file name is protected to the same degree as the file contents.
ShredIt is available in English, French, German and Japanese. To use the utility, you need a Mac 608×0 or Power Mac running Mac OS 8 or later. PPC, 68k, and FAT versions are available.
The cost is US$10 for individual users, $25 for a small business site license (2-5 computers), and $20 per computer for a corporate site license (more than five computers.
