Is there a problem with Apple’s 17-inch Studio Display? Some Mac users are reporting problems and the situation is being discussed on Apple’s display discussion list.
Mac user Neil Kennedy recently contacted MacCentral and described his experience with his 17-inch graphite Studio Display. He said he hears a “popping” sound, similar to a static discharge. Then the monitor zooms in and dims at the same time. The first few times this happened, the situation quickly resolved itself.
“But on Jan. 22, the frequency of this popping increased tremendously,” Kennedy said. “So much so that I decided to investigate and see if anyone else had experienced this and what, if anything, could be done to fix the problem … the general run of the complaints on the Apple forum is that these 17-inch studio displays start this popping and then crap out entirely, around 2-6 months after their 1-year warranty has expired.”
Apple hasn’t commented on the situation, nor acknowledged any sort of common problem relating to the displays. Kennedy said that based on his participation in the forum, the “typical cost” for out-of-warranty repair is around US$300.
