Macworld UK reports that the Design Museum has given its first Designer of the Year award to Apple vice president of industrial design Jonathan Ive. Ive’s designs include the CRT-based iMac, the flat-panel G4-equipped iMac, and the iPod.
The London-based Design Museum created the Designer of the Year award as a way or recognizing individual designers or design teams either based in the UK or born in the UK. Ive, who now lives in the United States, was born in Britain and educated at Newcastle Polytechnic, according to Macworld UK’s report.
Ive beat out three other finalists, including video game developer Rockstar Games (the team that created Grand Theft Auto: Vice City); jewelry designer Solange Azagury-Partridge; and glassware, lighting and furniture designer Tord Boontje. Ive receives a £25,000 prize as the winner.
