Nikotel Inc. has released a new version (1.8) of mac2phone that’s compatible with Mac OS X (10.2 and higher). The software lets you make domestic and international long distance phone calls from your Mac.
“Right now we are using our own interface (skin system) on a Java program and, beginning with version 2.0, we will use a native Aqua interface on Java,” said Nikolai Manek, CEO of Nikotel. “Soon we will also release phone software that will allow video conferencing between Mac OS X computers and also Mac OS X to PCs and vice versa.”
With mac2phone you can communicate with other “soft phones” and IP phones worldwide and receive incoming calls from any VoIP (Voice over IP)-enabled phone. The application is free, but you’ll need to enter valid payment information and fill up your prepaid account at the product Web site. You can then use the complete account for phone calls. Nikotel said the rates are cheaper than traditional telephone rates.
