new CAT5-7000 and CAT5-8000 extenders provide a way to remote-control your computers from 330 to 600 feet away. The devices extend the operating range of monitors, USB peripherals and other devices through CAT5 networking cable.
The CAT5-7000 extends two analog monitors, any USB peripheral, two audio outputs and one audio input up to 330 feet away from your computer (PS/2 inputs and RS-232 touch screens are also supported, if you’re working with PCs). The CAT5-800 model supports up to three monitors. Monitor extensions can lengthen that distance to 600 feet (USB extensions are limited to 450 feet).
Practical applications for such hardware includes industries where it’s important to keep computers safely away from hostile work environments — manufacturing, for example, or healthcare. Both systems work on either Macs or PCs equipped with analog displays.
Gefen sells both extenders for US$1,495. More details are available from the Web site.
