Apple’s announcement on Monday of new Power Mac G5 systems slated for release this August spurred PowerPC Linux maker Terra Soft Solutions Inc. to announce that it too will update its software to support the radical new architecture.
The Power Mac G5 features a PowerPC G5 microprocessor built by IBM, also known as the PowerPC 970. The new 64-bit processor is the centerpiece of an all-new motherboard design for the new Power Mac G5. While the guts of the system are different, Terra Soft doesn’t anticipate problems getting Yellow Dog Linux to work with it.
“As Yellow Dog Linux was in 2000 enabled for the IBM Power3 by IBM Lab and Linuxcare, and subsequently for the Power4, the effort to support the 970-based Apple computers is anticipated to be completed with relative ease,” said the company.
What’s more, the company is also an authorized Apple Reseller. Terra Soft is accepting pre-orders for Power Mac G5s and will offer them pre-installed with Mac OS X and Yellow Dog Linux. Users who place their orders now will receive free installation support. Visit the Web site for details.
