In a Reuters article entitled Sony CEO – Glimmers of Hope in Music Business, Sony Corp.’s U.S. Chief Executive and Chairman Howard Stringer said that Apple CEO Steve Jobs has “liberated” companies looking to succeed in the commercial digital music business.
Speaking before attendees of a recent breakfast in New York hosted by The New Yorker and Syracuse University’s Newhouse School, Stringer called the iTunes Music Store “a sea change” and a “wake-up call,” according to the Reuters report.
Stringer suggested that Sony and other companies would “duplicate” Apple’s success with the iTunes Music Store. “We’re all doing the same things and providing our own solutions.”
Stringer added that the industry will continue to litigate against individual seen as widespread sources of music piracy.
“I think you’ll see a large number of suits aimed at individuals that are not just beating the system but devouring it,” said Stringer, referring to users who make available thousands of songs to file sharing services.
