With all the news coming from WWDC, it was easy to miss, but earlier this week OpenOffice.org announced that
OpenOffice 1.0 for OS X has gone gold master. You can download it now from the OpenOffice.org Web site.
OpenOffice is an open source project that provides users with a suite of office productivity applications. The suite includes full-featured word processing, spreadsheet, multimedia presentation and illustration software, as well as tools to connect your content to databases.
OpenOffice requires the install of an X11-compatible windowing system, a commonly-used graphical interface for UNIX systems that Apple supports with its own
X11 for Mac OS X release.
“While stable enough for usage and offering the majority of the functionality to OpenOffice.org on other platforms, this is not a traditional MacOS X user-friendly application,” caution the developers. “This build is meant for the Darwin community and Unix-savvy MacOS X user community …”
OpenOffice for OS X’s X11 dependency will change. The developers have already plotted a roadmap (posted to the Web site) outlining their plans to create a completely native Mac OS X version supporting Mac OS X’s Quartz rendering environment and compliant with Apple’s Aqua user interface. What’s more, they’ll bring the codebase up to date to 1.1.
