Trans Intl. has released a 7200RPM hard disk drive that’s targeted as an internal replacement for laptop computers. Available in a 60GB capacity and 2.5-inch form factor, the drive’s battery consumption is purportedly about the same level as a 5400RPM drive.
The 7200RPM drive, which has an ATA interface, boasts quiet acoustics thanks to the incorporation of fluid dynamic bearing technology, according to Trans Intl. Despite this, it spins 33 percent faster than a 5400RPM. It has a cache buffer of 8MB, an average seek time of 10 milliseconds, media transfer rates up to 568 Mbits/sec, a shock rating of 1000G/1ms, and a maximum interface transfer rate of 100MB/sec.
The mobile 60GB 7200 RPM drive is also available as an external FireWire/USB portable disk drive. The drive has a price of approximately US$350.
