Mac peripheral maker MCE Technologies LLC has released a 24x internal CD-R/RW drive suitable for installation in the original Bondi Blue and “fruit”-colored iMacs — tray-loading iMacs operating at 233, 266, and 333MHz (often called Rev. A-D models).
The drive ships with software for burning audio and data CDs, and is compatible with iTunes and disc burning using the Finder as well, according to MCE. User-installable, the drive comes with detailed installation instructions — it’s designed to replace the original CD-ROM drives that shipped with these systems. What’s more, MCE includes a colored eject button overlay to match the new drive to the iMac’s chassis color.
The drive burns standard 650MB and 700MB CD-R media at up to 24x speed, reads CD-ROMs at up to 24x, and can burn CD-RW media at up to 10x speed. The drive is bootable and is compatible with Mac OS 9 and X. It ships with Roxio’s Toast Lite software.
The new 24x internal CD-RW for iMacs costs US$179 and is available immediately. It ships with two CD-R discs. If you’d prefer to have the drive installed professionally, MCE offers a list of certified MCE upgrade centers from its WEb site.
