Destineer subsidiary MacSoft announced Thursday that its long-awaited Mac conversion of Neverwinter Nights will ship on July 30th, available at US retailers in the first week of August. European retail availability is anticipated shortly thereafter.
Developed by Bioware Corp., Neverwinter Nights is billed as “the most complete software adaptation ever of the classic pen-and-paper Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game.” Bioware is the same developer responsible for the Baldur’s Gate series.
In Neverwinter Nights, you adopt the role of a hero who must save the city of Neverwinter as it’s besieged by a horrible plague and a sinister conspiracy. You can also act as a Dungeon Master, leading other players through adventures.
The Mac winter of Neverwinter Nights supports multiplayer action between PC and Mac users, and what’s more, it can use player-built add-ons created for the PC version. Alas, the Mac game lacks the Windows version’s Aurora Toolset, which is needed to create those new scenarios.
“Neverwinter Nights will provide limitless adventure and Macintosh gamers will have unprecedented game play options as they join the existing Neverwinter Nights community,” said Trent Oster, BioWare’s Project Director and Producer of Neverwinter Nights.
System requirements call for a G4/450MHz or faster; 256MB RAM; 32MB video card; 2.1GB hard disk space and a monitor with support for 800×600 resolution or higher.
