Peripheral maker MCE Technologies LLC on Friday announced that it is shipping new Apple iBooks equipped with internal DVD-R/RW drives as standard equipment, instead of the CD-RW/DVD combo drive normally installed on these machines.
MCE includes DVD authoring software for Mac OS X and Mac OS 9 that can be used to create video DVDs, along with Toast Lite from Roxio, used for burning audio and data CDs. What’s more, the drives are compatible with iTunes and the Finder’s own Disc Burning software.
MCE is shipping the 12-inch 900MHz iBook with internal DVD-R/RW for US$1,299 — the same retail price as an unmodified system. The 14-inch 900MHz model costs $1,499 — likewise, the same price as it is in unmodified form.
The drive installed by MCE Technologies can write to DVD-R and DVD-RW media at 1x speed, reads DVD-RAM media, writes to CD-R media at up to 16x speed, writes to CD-RW media at 10x, and reads CD-ROMs at up to 24x.
MCE also offers larger hard drive or memory options for an additional price. Visit the Web site for more details. MCE Technologies, Apple Products Division is an Apple Authorized Dealer.
MCE noted on its Web site that the offer is for a limited time only, while supplies last.
