Fans of Apple’s Power Mac G4 Cube can rejoice. Apple isn’t bringing the Cube back to its lineup, but Kemplar is selling revamped versions of the compact Mac that are more powerful than some of Apple’s current systems.
Apple put the kibosh on the Cube in 2001, but a contingent of avid Cube-sters remain. Kemplar is offering a US$1,879 Cube with a Sonnet Technologies Encore processor upgrade that has the computer running on a G4/1.25GHz chip. It’s dual bootable (Mac OS X and Mac OS 9.x.) and comes equipped with a Nvidia GeForce3 Video card with 64MB of VRAM.
The Kemplar-equipped Cube sports 1GB of RAM (which is upgradeable to 1.5GB), a 120GB Western Digital Caviar hard drive, Apple Pro Cube Speakers, and the Apple Pro optical mouse and keyboard. The standard unit comes with a CD-RW drive, but can be customized with a CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo Drive for an extra $300 or a MCE DVD-R Superdrive for an additional $450.
