Other World Computing (OWC) has rolled out Mercury Ti and Mercury Cube slot-loading internal SuperDrive and Combo drives that are compatible with Titanium PowerBook G4s and Cubes.
The drives lets you replace an internal optical drive with either the OWC SuperDrive or the OWC Combo Drive (which provides CD-R/RW and DVD playback). The company says that both drives are “100 percent compatible” with all Apple software titles, including iDVD (SuperDrive only, of course), iTunes, and Disc Burner.
The OWC SuperDrive touts 24X speed CD-ROM reading, 16X speed CD-R writing; 4X speed CD-RW writing/re-writing; 8X speed DVD-ROM reading; 1X speed DVD-R writing; 1X speed DVD-RW writing/re-writing; buffer underrun protection; and a 2MB write cache. The SuperDrives cost US$379.95 for both the Titanium PB and Cube models.
The OWC Mercury Combo Drive boasts 24X speed CD-ROM reading; 8X speed CD-R writing; 8X speed CD-RW writing/re-writing; 8X speed DVD-ROM reading; buffer underrun protection; and a 2MB write cache. The Combo Drives are $199.95 for the Titanium PowerBook and Cube models. Also, OWC offers a trade-in rebate of $19 or $85, respectively, for the return of a properly functioning Apple CD/DVD or Apple CD-R/RW+DVD that the new OWC drive has replaced.
